INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Dec. 20, 2023) – As a spectacular 2023 comes to a close, Indianapolis-based Green Savoree Racing Promotions (GSRP) has already shifted into high gear with preparations for an expanded and diverse motorsports schedule of events in 2024.
The company will promote and operate 10 major spectator events next year at four different motorsport properties, bringing high-speed entertainment to the Midwest, Pacific Northwest and Southeast regions of the United States, plus north of the border again in Ontario, Canada. Next year’s slate for the company is highlighted by new IMSA and MotoAmerica events at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and an expanded Formula E doubleheader weekend in Portland.
“Our team is grateful for another outstanding year of racing action and strong spectator support at our events across North America. We can’t thank the race teams, drivers, our partners and our great fans enough,” said Kim Green, co-owner, chairman and CEO of Green Savoree Racing Promotions. “We look forward to kicking off another big year in March as we celebrate 20 years of IndyCar racing on the streets of St. Petersburg!”
GSRP is a longtime promoter of NTT INDYCAR SERIES events. The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding was first organized by GSRP in 2005, a race won by the late local resident Dan Wheldon. In addition to the season opening St. Petersburg, Fla. event in March, the company will also host IndyCar events at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, on the streets of Toronto, Ontario, and at Portland International Raceway (PIR) next summer.
Including the NTT INDYCAR SERIES weekend in August, GSRP will again promote three major race events at PIR next year. The only U.S. stop for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, Portland, Ore. is back on the series’ 2024 schedule as a doubleheader format with a race Saturday and Sunday. The NASCAR Xfinity Series also returns to the Rose City for the Pacific Office Automation 147 at PIR for the third time under GSRP’s stewardship in 2024.
GSRP’s diverse business also includes owning and operating Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and The Mid-Ohio School. The legendary Lexington, Ohio facility will hold over 100 driving and motorcycle riding school courses next year and host nearly 25 club weekends.
Two of the most highly-anticipated major spectator events at Mid-Ohio next summer perfectly end cap its 2024 schedule. The IMSA Sports Car Four-Hour Classic at Mid-Ohio, headlined by the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge endurance race, serves as the season opener, then its 63rd season concludes with MotoAmerica Superbikes at Mid-Ohio, featuring six classes of two-wheel racing. This professional motorsport returns to the 2.4-mile, 15-turn natural terrain road course for the first time since 2014.
“This past year was one to remember as our company continued to grow and diversify its events. We want to thank all our partners for making it possible, especially new additions to the team, BitNile.com and Permco, plus the long-standing support from Cooper Tires, Firestone, Honda, Ontario Honda Dealers Association, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Pacific Office Automation, RP Funding and many other dedicated sponsors,” said Kevin Savoree, co-owner, president and chief operating officer of Green Savoree Racing Promotions. “We look forward to continuing many old traditions and starting new ones in 2024 with the expansion of the Portland Formula E race into a doubleheader and two new exciting Mid-Ohio events.”
Heading into the 2023 season, GSRP embarked on a project to enhance the viewing experience for its races across three different properties. The company acquired three million pounds of steel and aluminum grandstand equipment and suite structures which were first installed and utilized at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding in March. Some of the equipment was then transported and installed at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and PIR for the summer lineup of events at those properties. In summary, the new structures were enjoyed by spectators and suite guests across eight race weekends in 2023.
This past season was action-packed from start to finish for both the fans and the hard-working GSRP team traveling to almost every corner of the U.S. and into Canada staging world-class events. Over 1,000 room nights alone were used to organize and execute the events in Portland, Ore. These race weekends generated a number of memorable racing highlights for fans across North America.
To open the year, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding kicked off the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season for the 13th time in March. A star-studded weekend included legendary golfer Annika Sorenstam serving as grand marshal and country music star Trace Adkins singing the national anthem as Chip Ganassi Racing’s Marcus Ericsson, the 2022 Indianapolis 500 winner, took the checkered flag.
In June, GSRP brought the NASCAR Xfinity Series to PIR for the second annual Pacific Office Automation 147. The weekend included both fast cars and country stars as The Brothers Osborne and Sam Hunt performed full concerts for event attendees. On the 12-turn road course, Cole Custer beat Justin Allgaier to the finish line by just 0.142 seconds en route to his first career win on a road course and later claiming the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship.
A few weeks later back at PIR, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the world’s premier all-electric racing series, made its Portland, Ore. debut for the 2023 Southwire Portland E-Prix. As Formula E’s only U.S. stop in 2023, Portland joined global cities such as Berlin, London, Mexico City and São Paulo on the series’ schedule. The new event drew a capacity crowd at PIR as Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy won in a thrilling race that featured a Formula E record 403 on-track passes!
On the same weekend as Formula E’s inaugural event in Portland, the 62nd season of racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Course began June 23-25 with a new partner in Permco. The Permco Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, formerly named the Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, featured 24 total races with classic and contemporary cars competing in six different racing series.
Race fans at Mid-Ohio on Fourth of July weekend saw the eventual 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Alex Palou take the checkered flag at The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the 2023 Accord Hybrid. The 40th running of Ohio’s largest annual motorsports event also featured the Lexington native singing sisters of Sorellé - finalists on NBC’s “The Voice” - as grand marshals, a fireworks display and patriotic “Camping with Honda” festivities. Then, the very next weekend, the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series came to the renowned road course for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 150 at Mid-Ohio.
The Honda Indy Toronto convened on the downtown streets at Exhibition Place for its 35th edition on July 14-16. The iconic summer festival saw fans flock to Your Ontario Honda Dealers Present Honda Fan Friday and featured Danish driver Christian Lundgaard shaving off his mustache at the Unibet Victory Circle after securing his first-career NTT INDYCAR SERIES win. The following weekend, to wrap up July, the action headed back to Mid-Ohio for Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, the traditional event which spreads motorcycling celebration across all 380 acres of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course property.
In the final GSRP event of the year, BitNile.com joined the team as the title sponsor of the newly named BITNILE.COM Grand Prix of Portland. The penultimate IndyCar race of the season on Labor Day weekend crowned a champion as Alex Palou clinched the 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship with his second-career win at PIR.
In October, following the conclusion of the stellar 2023 race season, further capital investments and property enhancements were made by GSRP as a full repave project of the entire racing surface at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was completed. The project used 6,000 tons of new asphalt mixture all sourced locally and involved 11,550 feet of surface paving by crews. The successful completion was a highly-organized collaboration using the expert services of Kokosing Construction Company, Inc., Kokosing Materials, Inc. and Advanced Materials Services, LLC.
